Canon Andrew White has been a leading advocate for persecuted Christians. From the UK he went to Iraq in 2003 and reopened St George’s church after the invasion of Iraq even though civil war raged and the diplomats and ex-pats who once made up the congregation no longer dared to go there. Iraqis came instead, and the congregation reached a peak of 6,500. They built a school, a clinic and food bank. Almost 2,000 of his parishioners have been killed, some because they refused to convert to Islam, others were killed in bomb explosions and four Alpha course leaders were killed when Christian material was found in their car. There used to be 1.5 million Christians in Iraq but now there are only 260,000. It is believed that Islamic State has put a huge price on Canon White’s head to anyone who will kill him. Please come and hear him give his eyewitness account next Sunday night.
