A great suggestion from an tAthair Pádraig. ‘Ár bPaidreacha Dúchais’.
This book is a selection of prayers and blessings from the oral tradition from both Ireland (Gaeilge) and Scotland (Scots Gaelic) collected by Diarmuid Ó Laoghaire SJ. There are over 500 prayers and 400 blessings in this collection- almost all of the prayers are at least two hundred years old so they link us in a special way with the spirituality of our ancestors.
It was first published in 1975 and has been reprinted at least six times due to demand. It is published by the Jesuits and can be bought by sending an email to antimire@gmail.com or a note to Frainc Mac Brádaigh SJ, 37 Lr Leeson St, Dublin 2.
For those who would like a bilingual book of traditional prayers I would recommend ‘Paidreacha na Gaeilge: Prayers in Irish’ edited by Donla Uí Bhraonáin (Cois Life, 2008) and available by sending email to eolas@cic.ie or by phone to 091 593307. This is a beautifully laid out book of almost 100 prayers/blesssings from the oral tradition and draws on ‘Ár bPaidreacha Dúchais’ mentioned above and other sources.
Alternatively, it’s available from the publisher ‘Cois Life’ for online purchase;
