Please dig deep when the Saint Benildus boys come calling down your street or on a traffic junction; this will be the twentieth year of helping charities with the Run for Life…….Mercy in Action.
Saint Benildus College were delighted to mark the official launch of the RUN FOR LIFE 2021 initiative yesterday. The morning began with assemblies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd years where Mr Holland spoke to them about the significance of this charity initiative and the difference their fundraising makes in our community. Mr Murray explained the rationale and practicalities of the fundraiser itself . Representatives from a number of charities including Living with Dementia, Dundrum Arch Club, Special Olympics Ireland, Focus Ireland and St Vincent de Paul about the difference the funds make to their organisations Our guest speakers really gave the boys a great insight into the positive effect every euro fund-raised has on the people that they work with. Following this the official launch took place with the aid of some students and TD Neale Richmond and former Irish rugby player Reggie Corrigan, We thank them for their unwavering support. Many thanks also to Ms. Colbert who as always was on hand to take the photographs. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the beginning of the initiative. Over the last 19 years we have raised over 847,000 euro for worthwhile local and national charitable causes. Perhaps most impressively the vast majority of this fundraising has been student led, Our students learn some invaluable lessons in courage, selflessness, humility and the power of helping others through this initiative, some lessons which simply cannot be found in a textbook. Charities are more in demand now than they have been ever before and their financial situations have never been more precarious. The last 18 months have been incredibly difficult for all, people who never thought they would struggle have struggled in ways nobody could have predicted. Charities have found themselves in heart-breaking situations where they haven’t been able to help those who need it most. Many people have had loss but through RUN FOR LIFE we can light the beacon of hope for those in need. So we ask that all members of our community make a huge push this year to brighten the days of those who find themselves in the dark. Run For Life has been changing the lives of those in need for 20 years, here’s to the next 20. This years event takes place on the 19th of November which culminates in the run for each year group, the roadside collection will also take place on the 18/19th of November. Students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd year will receive their sponsorship cards today and tomorrow and select a charity with the help of their tutor. We ask that each student makes a conscious effort to get out and fund-raise over the midterm break and to really remember the words of those guest speakers they heard when they seek the motivation to do so. The cards along with all sponsorship gathered will need to be returned in the coming weeks. We are so proud of all your efforts boys and of all those who have made this the special event it is for the last 20 years.
