From Father Peter’s Desk: 22nd October 2019

At the 10.00 Mass on Sunday the young people who are to make their confirmation participated actively in the Mass. They introduced and processed at the beginning of the Mass, they read the prayers of the faithful, brought forward the offertory gifts and read the beautiful prayer of St. John Henry Newman. All this a sign of their desire to prepare with family and parish for their fourth sacrament.

This Sunday also brought members of the “Dublin Welsh Male Choir” who have chosen our parish to host a concert on the 1st of November. Of course we had the ever gentle and kind presence of the volunteers of the St Vincent de Paul working on behalf of all the Parish doing their monthly collection.

“Heart Speaks to Heart” by Dermot Mansfield was the book recommended to know more about the life of John Henry Newman. Several people asked for his beautiful “Daily Prayer” which was published in last weeks bulletin and his “Lead Kindly Light” here below.

Lead, kindly Light, amid the encircling gloom,
Lead thou me on!
The night is dark, and I am far from home,–
Lead thou me on!
Keep thou my feet; I do not ask to see
The distant scene,–one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that thou
Shouldst lead me on:
I loved to choose and see my path, but now
Lead thou me on!
I loved the garish days, and, spite of fears,
Pride ruled my will: remember not past years.

So long thy power hath blessed me, sure it still
Will lead me on;
O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till
The night is gone;
And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile.
